Football people already know how to watch a game. What they are short of is a place to put the week.
This letter is that place. It is not a preview. It is not a verdict. It is one argument, one piece of work, one object — written for the morning you already set aside.
I have spent forty years inside the game: drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1984, on staffs under Bill Snyder and Mike Leach, publisher of American Football Quarterly, now building a print object meant to outlast the cycle that flattened the writing around the sport. The game did not get thinner. The room around it did.
Kept is the Sunday room. The Show opens the door during the week. The magazine is the thing we print and number and do not reprint. The letter is how the work arrives when the house is still quiet.
If you are reading this at 8:00, the day is still clean. Keep it that way for another few minutes.
